Codecs

Codec is a sort of play on words: enCOder/DECoder. It is a broad term to describe the hardware and software that COmpresses and DECompresses your media, to reduce file size. Without codecs, raw video and audio files would be unmanageably massive and near impossible to livestream. See below for examples of codecs.

When your camera records live media, that data needs to be converted in real time to a codec before it can be sent to a destination. This process is called encoding.
